Programmatic advertising in the USA, UK, Australia, Germany, and France emits over 215,000 metric tons of carbon monthly, equating to 24 million gallons of gasoline, according to Scope3's 'Q1 2023 State of Sustainable Advertising' report. The most carbon-intensive 10% of web domains contribute over 33,500 metric tons of CO2e monthly. Founded in 2022, Scope3 aims to decarbonise the advertising sector.

Key findings indicate that 60% of emissions come from 'ad selection' due to a complex supply chain. 'Climate Risk' websites emit twice the industry's average. Reducing spend on these sites could cut 33.5k mt of CO2e each month, akin to 3,449 global road trips.

Anne Coghlan of Scope3 stresses the need for industry collaboration for greener advertising. By adjusting ad auction methods, energy use can be reduced, promoting transparency, privacy, and efficiency. Scope3's partnership with Insider, Inc. saw a marked emission drop.
